Learner Centered Teaching and Learning Approach

Our teaching and learning approach is learner centered whereby students are active participants in learning and co-constructors of knowledge as opposed to passive recipients. Lecturers act as mentors and advisors to encourage students’ participation in active learning. Interactions between Lecturers and students facilitate the learning process through discovery, inquiry, and problem solving. The objective of our learner centred teaching and learning approach is to nurture students’ intrinsic motivation to learn and development of students’ abilities to acquire problem solving techniques. The overall goal is to deliver an effective learning process and outcome rather than just high scores. In addition to the learner centred teaching and learning approach, our e-learning and e-library systems are available 24/7 to facilitate continuous learning beyond classroom lectures. Beyond classroom hours, students continue to engage in learning online through personal revision, asking questions to Lecturers and discussions with classmates under the moderation of the Lecturer. More so, computer laboratories are open 24/7 to make it flexible for students to carry out practicals. Community Engagement (Field Work Attachment)

UTAMU has a unique field work attachment programme called community engagement for all its students that involves practical job placement for students for 4 months each academic year. By the end of a 3 year programme, a student at UTAMU has 12 months of work/field practice with various organisations which is equivalent to one year’s work experience. The objectives of this approach are three fold;
  • To facilitate further development of students’ practical skills through application of the knowledge and skills acquired in class to real life problems and development of real life solutions
  • To facilitate acquisition of key employability skills such as communication, problem solving, self-drive, time management, etc.
  • To provide an interactive environment for academic staff, students and potential employers to get feedback about the curriculum for continuous improvement and to connect students to prospective employers.
During field work, students are supervised by a University supervisor on at least three occasions. The goal of this approach to field work attachment is to produce competitive graduates not only in Uganda but in the entire region.


Uganda Technology and Management University has an E-Learning System that provides 24/7 access to all UTAMU’s teaching and learning activities to students and staff. At anytime anywhere, registered students can access their learning resources, communicate with their lecturers and fellow students, participate in academic discussions and undertake online assessments. The Uganda Technology and Management University E-Library provides a vast collection of resources that support both student learning and staff research. It also profiles a big collection of open access resources that are free and open to the general public.

Uganda Technology & Management University is part of the Consortium of Uganda University Libraries (CUUL). CUUL was established in December 2001 and consists of most public and private academic libraries in licensed and accredited institutions of higher education in Uganda. Some research institutions are also affiliate members of the Consortium. CUUL is a registered non-profit association with the Ugandan Registrar of Companies, Limited by Guarantee under the Companies Act, Laws of Uganda.Visit UTAMU E-Library here
