Directorate of Engagement, Research & Innovation

The Directorate for Engagement, Research and Innovation oversees brilliant ideas emerging from academic units and provides the enablers for the polishing, commercialisation and scaling out of innovations.

This Directorate oversees five Centers

1. The Center for Engagement, Policy and Development Research (CEPDR)

This Center is mandated to liase with government offices, Non-Governmental Organisations, private organisations, public offices and communities. These topics are then forwarded to researchers in the Schools who then undertake the research. This Center monitors the research and disseminates the findings.

2. The Center for Innovations and Business Incubation (CIBI)

This Center is responsible for identifying innovative ideas that are emerging from research being undertaken at the Schools. Innovative prototypes are identified and transformed into commercially viable products. The Center has introduced a BUSINESS INCUBATION project which is open to holders of atleast a Bachelors degree. In here, the students go through an eleven months training (5 months during the last semester) in which they are equipped with the skills to transform their idea or prototype into a commercially viable product.

At the end of the training, the students have:

  • Registered their own company or NGO;
  • Acquired intellectual property rights on their product or services
  • Been linked to their potential customers (organizations that will be highly interested in their goods or services)
  • Been equipped with skills on becoming an entrepreneur

More information can be found HERE.

3. The Center for Executive and Professional Skills Development.

This Center provides training in executive and professional skills programes. These programs are tailor made to address specific needs of an organisation or individuals of similar interests. The Center conducts short courses whose duration ranges from 3 days to 6 months.

4. The Center for Learning Technologies

This Center is responsible for providing support for teaching and learning through introduction of cutting edge emerging technologies. This aids different forms of support for in-class, on-campus, off-campus, personal and group teaching, learning and research. Therefore this Center makes sure that all new learning technologies to be introduced within the University are effectively tested before finally being rolled out.

5. The Center for Entrepreneurship and Business Development

This Center makes follow-up on the students and graduates of UTAMU to ensure that they continuously receive support before and after graduation. In the early stages of their education, students are encouraged and supported to develop the ideas that they are passionate about into business ideas and later on into business proposals and enterprises.
