Uganda Technology and Management University will be host the 3rd Deep Learning, Machine Learning and Artificial Intelligence Conference scheduled to take place on 29th May 2020 at Silver Springs Hotel in Bugolobi, Kampala.

The conference will have discussions focusing on areas of intelligent systems and artificial intelligence (AI) and how it applies to the real world, Artificial Intelligence in the developing world, Artificial Intelligence research opportunities in Uganda and Africa as a Continent and Emerging trends in Artificial Intelligence.

The event brings together researchers and practitioners from diverse fields with the purpose of exploring the fundamental roles, interactions as well as practical impacts of Artificial Intelligence (AI).

UTAMU will host the conference alongside others sponsors among which is Facebook Developer Circles – Kampala and AI & Data Science Research Group.

 

UTAMU has opened a liaison office in Nigeria a move to expand and deepen academic exchange in West Africa.

The office is headed by the University’s Country Representative and Program Coordinator in Nigeria, Dr. Mahmud  Babatunde Ajeigbe and located in Kaduna State in Nigeria. Dr. Ajeigbe is an Associate Professor in the UTAMU School of Business & Management.

This is a great achievement for UTAMU and a sign that it is expanding its relations with other West African institutions of higher education but also to directly connect with international students in the region.

 “This is a bridge linking UTAMU to more collaborations and also provide an opportunity for more international students in the region to pursue higher education at Uganda Technology and Management University,” says Prof. Sadiq Yusuf, Vice Chancellor UTAMU.

In addition, the liaison office will assist in coordinating and integrating all the functions and activities of the university in West Africa.

“The West Africa office offers various services to the public, such as advice on the appropriate academic programmes to study, technologies and research, collaborations and community engagement for those applying to join the university.

One can also be able to pick application form, fill application form and pick admission forms.

Last week, the UTAMU Graduate School organized a research workshop for all lecturers and supervisors to skill them with the required knowledge on the best approaches to supervise research at both undergraduate and postgraduate level.

Speaking at the workshop, Dr. Okwadi Tukei, the Dean Graduate School said UTAMU’s objective is to improve student research supervision and ensure quality research output. “As a university, we need to drive UTAMU forward and ensure we share knowledge about the best models and approaches of research supervision,” said Dr. Tukei.


The academic staff was taken through the models and approaches to graduate supervision, customer centered reach approaches and later reflected on how research supervision guidelines ought to be. All supervisors were tasked to read UTAMU guidelines before signing off any student’s work.

Dr. Michael Okoche, lecturer in the School of Business and Management explained the different approaches to supervision including the functional approach, enculturation approach, critical thinking approach, emancipation approach and relation development approach.“Different students might require different approaches depending on their level of knowledge,” he said, “I believe the knowledge, skills and attitudes acquired will help us become effective in supervising students.” 


Dr. Okoche also advised the lecturers to always undertake constant evaluation and allow the students to argue and challenge them.


Dilemmas in postgraduate supervision were also discussed such as the mechanisms used in appointment of supervisors, the choice and quality of supervisors to mention but a few. The next research workshop for students is scheduled to take place on Friday, 28th February 2020 at UTAMU Campus in Bugolobi.

 

The Rotaract Club of UTAMU on Saturday, 18th January 2020 had a vocational tour at one of Uganda's leading snacks manufacturer Psalms Food Industries Ltd.

RUTAMU team that visited Psalms Food Factory in Nasana being given a tour by the Operations Manager.

Psalms Food produces a variety of snacks including Potato Crisps, Gonja Crisps, pumpkin seeds and Cashew seeds.

The Chief Executive Officer of Psalms Food, Dennis Ngabirano, gave the RUTAMU team a tour of the factory located in Nansana, Wakiso District.

From a humble beginning as a teacher at City Parents School, Ngabirano is now a CEO of a company that employs over 140 youths and supplies to school canteens and supermarkets around the city. All this he said was possible because of hard work and determination.

“Everything takes time. Just leave your comfort zones and make your dream a reality,” he told the rotaractors.

The RUTAMU team was also taken through production processes of different products made at Psalms Food.
