Reducing Crime Using ICT Knowledge from a Computer Security and Forensics Perspective

Kidnap in Uganda have become rampant and left the public living in fear. Police and other government security agencies have tried hard to protect the people through enhancing physical security and installation of CCTV cameras but still every other day we hear of someone being kidnapped and discovered dead. The Uganda annual crime report 2018 indicates that crime volume decreased by 5.2% with 238,746 cases registered in 2018 compared to 252,065 cases in 2017.  Much as the government has put a lot of effort in reducing these crimes, the public is still living in fear because of the continuous kidnap cases.

To enhance ICT techniques in crime prevention, UTAMU students undertaking the Computer Security and Forensics course, have come up with technologies to help in securing computer systems, forensics, investigation, and be used to curb kidnaps and theft among others.  These include Smart Watch, CAMA, among others.

Smart Watch” is a watch-like device with a simple button that when pressed, it alerts the responsible individuals due the process of kidnap. If this technology is adopted, the chances of a victim being murdered by kidnappers will be reduced since the police or other responsible people are alerted with the location of a victim in the shortest period of time. This can also save family members of the victim from paying large amounts of ransom.

The other system called “Crime Awareness Mobile Application (CAMA)” will help to provide information of crimes happening in a specific town, and the time when the crimes likely occur. Most people will stop being worried about visiting or shifting in new locations where they are unaware of its crime situation since the application will provide them with the latest information. Having more of these systems implemented, we are more likely to have a clam and kidnap free society.
