Master of Information Technology (MIT)

The School of Computing and Engineering is mandated to run academic programmes and undertake research and innovations in Computing and Engineering disciplines. 

The Master of Information Technology Programme is aimed at equipping students with skills leading to the award of Master of Information Technology (MIT). The MIT will focus on equipping students with the necessary skills through engaging them in rigorous intellectual analysis, critique and problem solving using a variety of teaching and learning techniques. 

Thus, the students will attain essential skills, including research skills, critical thinking skills, analytical skills, life-long learning skills, interpersonal skills, intellectual and evaluative skills, problem solving skills, leadership and entrepreneurial skills. At the end of the programme, the students should be able to make decisions that span IT disciplines, innovate, take lead in the following disciplines; Data-Mining, Cloud Computing, Business Analyst, Business Intelligence, ICT Infrastructure, Information Management, Mobile Devices, Network Design and Management, Security and Forensics, Quality Assurance, System Architecture. 

Careers for students who have undertaken this Master Degree may include but not limited to the following; Analyst, System Developer, Data Miner, IT Managers, IT Entrepreneurs, IT Security Personnel etc.  

JUSTIFICATION

Uganda Technology And Management University (UTAMU) recognizes the fact that Information Technology (IT) is a very evolving discipline and therefore requires continuous update to whoever hopes to use it for service provision. Almost in any service across the world, IT is necessary and enables the effective provision of that service. UTAMU realizes that for the public and private sector service provision to be able to attain standards of excellence, IT training should be offered to all graduate students for efficiency. 

Thus, the MIT curriculum has been developed to ensure that the graduate students already at the work place and those one who further their studies in the area if Information Technology are equipped with further skills that are required while performing their duties. So the MIT will be open to all students with a minimal 3-year graduate degree who wish to acquire further skills in IT and all those who may wish to attain a Master Degree in Information Technology. 

By adopting the MIT, the country will be assured of having competent staff who can use IT for service provision irrespective of the service being offered. This will lead to great service provision within the country and across the world. 

Program Learning Outcomes

The graduate of Master of Information Technology shall be able to:

  • Develop analytical tools for decision making in an IT dynamic world of complex business processes and problems;
  • Advance development of skills in IT that promote the use of internationally accepted professional standards of competence;
  • Acquire theoretical and contemporary skills of analysis, critical thinking, synthesis and evaluation in relation to the Information Technology (IT) sector;
  • Develop innovations in the Information Technology field
  • Conduct scholarly research.
  • Offer expertise in the common Information Technology topics, with a special emphasis on digital security, database systems, web design and usability, multimedia
  • Manage and lead a team of people to achieve a common goal.
  • Keep abreast of the current developments in the discipline through personal learning and other research mechanisms 

Admission Requirements

To qualify for admission a candidate must fulfill the general Uganda Technology And Management University entry requirements for a master's degree, and in addition a candidate must be a holder of either: 

  • A Postgraduate Diploma in Information Technology, Information Systems, Computer Science, Software Engineering and computer engineering from a recognized University/ Institution; Or
  • A bachelor’s degree in any field of at least lower second-class honors, or its equivalent from a recognized University. 

Holders of at least second class Postgraduate Diploma in Information Technology may transfer their credits and join year two semester one of the Master of Information Technology.

Nature of the Programme

This is a programme that will be run using the Block and Release model and hence will be able to take care of all students who will want to follow the evening, weekend and distance modes of teaching. It will be completely privately sponsored and its duration is two years. The first year of study will have two semesters of course work and the second year will have two semesters of coursework and dissertation undertaken.

Duration

The duration for the Master of Information Technology (MIT) degree programme will be two (2) academic years comprising 4 semesters. 

Tuition Fees

The Tuition fees that will be payable by the students will enable the University sustain the program. Both international and local students will pay tuition fees totaling to Three Million and Six Hundred thousands shillings (3,600,000/=) per year.
