UTAMU Engages Life Academy on How to Integrate ICT in Teaching and Learning

A delegation led by Life Academy, Sweden visited Uganda Technology and Management University (UTAMU) on Tuesday, 24th October 2017.

The team that consisted of more than 30 people was welcomed by UTAMU staff and engaged in a discussion of how UTAMU integrates ICT in teaching and learning.

The team which included officials from Ministry of Education choose UTAMU as one of the Institutions in Uganda that integrates ICT in teaching and learning.

Ms Anita Ashaba, the Public Relations and Communications Officer, welcomed the delegation and introduced them to the e-learning culture of UTAMU. She explained to them the significance of integrating ICT in Education through application of the UTAMU Hybrid model.

At UTAMU students are given all learning materials through our e-learning platform together with the access to our e-library services. The e-learning platform is fully equipped and allows a consistent interaction among the students and their teachers.

“Our strategy at UTAMU is enabling ubiquitous learning which is learning from anywhere, anyhow,” said Ms. Ashaba. “We do this by enabling student-centered learning, using technology to avail content all the time, anywhere and creation of varied interactive content.”

The delegation also met with some of the UTAMU staff and students who showcased various ways in which the University uses ICT to impact knowledge. The staff discussed how a teacher can effectively integrate ICT in education, providing the appropriate knowledge and skills to a 21st Century student.

Mr. Denis Omvia, Lecturer in School of Business and Management giving his experience on how he uses e-learning as a teacher. 

Ms Claire Babirye, the e-Learning officer further educated the guests on what is offered at UTAMU to ensure a ubiquitous learning.

- Wi-Fi on campus, only registered users can access the network to avoid security issues and unknown users.

- Medium sized computer Labs for practicals, access to systems, research, etc.

- Content enrichment; SCORM packages, Animations. Multimedia team, eLearning officer and other participants take part.

Ms. Anita Ashaba, Public Relations Officer, receives a gift from Mr. Bo Gillgren, Coordinator of Life Academy delegation, on behaff of UTAMU.

“UTAMU has a robust digital library built on DSpace and a full time librarian offers training and support,” said Ms. Babirye.

On behalf of the delegates, Mr Bo Gillgren commended the UTAMU e-learning system and also applauded UTAMU for the hospitality given to them.
