UTAMU AI Student Solves Farmers Problems At #DLIndaba2019 in Kenya

UTAMU Computing student, Jean Faith Amukwatse represented the university at the 2019 Artificial Intelligence (AI) and machine learning conference hosted by Kenyatta University in Kenya.

More than 700 machine learning researchers from over 30 African countries gathered at Kenyatta University in Nairobi, Kenya for its third Annual Deep Learning Indaba conference held from 25th – 30th August 2019.

Jean showcased her innovation, SoMiT Lab – a simple innovative soil mineral deficiency detection device that analyzes and accurately detects mineral content in soil. This portable device can be accessed by any farmer to use to determine the type of mineral in their garden before planting any crop.

The participants presented the innovations that are using AI to improve social and economic development in Africa.

Indaba is a hub for Africa’s Artificial Intelligence community that represents a vision where AI engineers have access to opportunity regardless of nationality, race, or economic status.
