Admission Requirements

Admissions to UTAMU shall be open to all qualified national and international persons without discrimination. A student is admitted into an academic program when he/she meets the entry requirements into that program and level. Admissions into UTAMU is conducted under the guidance of the National Council for Higher Education and with the approval of the Senate.

General Requirements

  1. An applicant will be admitted upon fulfilling the following basic requirements:
    • Academic achievement,
    • Good character,
    • Financial support,
  2. The University reserves the final decision on matters of admission, retention, and withdrawal.
  3. A candidate admitted to a degree programme, diploma or certificate in any School shall comply with conditions and meet the guidelines set in the University’s admission policy. The admissions committee has the right to admit or refuse admission of any applicant.
  4. Registered students in another higher education institution in the Republic of Uganda or any recognized institution of learning who desire to be admitted to the University should apply for credit transfer through the academic registrar’s office

Ordinary Diploma Programme

The minimum entry requirements for admission to an ordinary diploma programme are:

  • A candidate must have obtained:
    a) At least five (5) passes at the Uganda Certificate of Education or its equivalent at the same sitting;
    b)At least one (1) principal pass and two (2) subsidiary passes obtained at the same sitting or its equivalent.

Bachelor's Degree Programme

The minimum entry requirements for admission to a Bachelor's degree programme are:

2 Bachelor of Science in Mobile Computing and Communications (BSc. MCC)
  1. At least two principal passes at the same sitting in Uganda Advanced Certificate of Education (UACE).
  2. At least one subsidiary pass in Mathematics in UACE.
  1. At least 2nd class (Lower division) Diploma in Computer Science, Engineering, Statistics, Information Technology, Information Systems or related field from any recognized Institution.
  2. At least one principal pass and two subsidiary passes at same sitting in Uganda UACE.
  3. At least one subsidiary pass in Mathematics in UACE.
 
3 Bachelor of Science in Computer Security and Forensics (BSc.CSF)
  1. At least two principal passes at the same sitting in Uganda Advanced Certificate of Education (UACE).
  2. At least one subsidiary pass in Mathematics in UACE.
  1. Atleast a second class (Lower division) Diploma in Computer Science, Engineering, Statistics, Information Technology, Information Systems or related field from any recognized Institution.
  2. At least one principal pass and two subsidiary passes at same sitting in UACE.
  3. At least one subsidiary pass in Mathematics in UACE
 
4 Bachelor of Information Systems and Technology (BIST) At least two principal passes at same sitting in Uganda Advanced Certificate of Education (UACE).
  1. At least 2nd Class (Lower division) diploma in Computer Science, IT, Engineering, Statistics or related field from any recognized institution.
  2. At least one principal pass and two subsidiary passes at the same sitting in UACE.
  1. CCNA Certificate from a recognized institution.
  2. At least one principal and two subsidiary passes at same sitting in UACE.
5 Bachelor of Information Science (BIS) At least two principal passes at same sitting in Uganda Advanced Certificate of Education (UACE)
  1. Atleast a second class (lower division) Diploma in Information Science, Library Science, Records Management, Computer Science, Engineering ,Statistics, Information Technology or a related field from any recognized Institution.
  2. At least one principal and two subsidiaries passes at the same sitting in UACE.
 
6 Bachelor of Business Computing (BBC) At least two principal passes at same sitting in Uganda Advanced Certificate of Education (UACE)
  1. At least a second class (lower division) Diploma from any recognized Institution;
  2. At least one principal and two subsidiary passes at the same sitting in UACE
 
7 Bachelor of Science in Software Engineering (BSc. SE) At least two principal passes at the same sitting in Uganda Advanced Certificate of Education (UACE) of which one of them MUST be in either Mathematics OR Physics
  1. At least 2nd class (Lower division) Diploma in Computer Science, Engineering, Telecom, Bio Informatics, Electronic engineering, Statistics or any other diploma with either Mathematics or Computer Science, as one of the subjects from any recognized Institution.
  2. Atleast one principal pass and two subsidiary passes at same sitting in Uganda Advanced Certificate of Education (UACE)
  3. Atleast one subsidiary pass in Mathematics in UACE.
 
8 Bachelor of Science in Computer Engineering (BSc. CE) At least two principal passes at the same sitting in Uganda Advanced Certificate of Education (UACE) of which one of them MUST be in Mathematics
  1. At least a second class (Lower division) Diploma in Computer Science, Engineering, Statistics or any other diploma with either Mathematics or Computer Science, as one of the subjects from any recognized Institution.
  2. At least one subsidiary pass in Mathematics in UACE
  3. At least one principal pass and two subsidiary passes at same sitting in UACE
 
SCHOOL OF BUSINESS AND MANAGEMENT
1 Bachelor of Business Administration (BBA) At least two principal passes at same sitting in Uganda Advanced Certificate of Education (UACE)
  1. At least 2nd Class (Lower division) diploma in Business Administration, Management, IT, Statistics, Development Economics, Library Studies, or related field from any recognized Institution.
  2. At least one principal pass and two subsidiary passes at the same sitting in UACE.
  1. CCNA Certificate from a recognized institution.
  2. At least one principal and two subsidiary passes at same sitting in UACE
2 Bachelor of Procurement and Supply Chain Management (BPSCM) At least two principal passes at same sitting in Uganda Advanced Certificate of Education (UACE).
  1. At least 2nd class (Lower division) diploma in Science, Business Administration, IT, Statistics, Economics or related field from any recognized Institution.
  2. At least one principal pass and two subsidiary passes at same sitting in UACE
 
3 Bachelor of Public Administration and Management (BPAM) At least two principal passes at same sitting in Uganda Advanced Certificate of Education (UACE).
  1. At least a 2nd class (Lower division) Diploma in Public Administration or a related field from any recognized Institution.
  2. At least one principal pass and two subsidiary passes at the same sitting in UACE.
 
4 Bachelor of Oil and Gas Management (BOGM) At least two principal passes at same sitting in Uganda Advanced Certificate of Education (UACE).
  1. At least a 2nd class ( Lower division) Diploma in Science, Business Administration, IT, Statistics, Public Administration, Law, Finance, Economics or any other related field from a recognized institution
  2. At least one principal pass and two subsidiary passes at the same sitting in UACE.
 
5 Bachelor of Human Resource Management (BHRM) At least two principal passes at same sitting in Uganda Advanced Certificate of Education (UACE).
  1. At least a 2nd class (Lower division) in related fields from a recognized institution
  2. At least one principal pass and two subsidiary passes at same sitting in Uganda Advanced Certificate of Education ( UACE)
 
6 Bachelor of Mass Communication and Journalism (BMCJ) At least two principal passes at same sitting in Uganda Advanced Certificate of Education (UACE).
  1. At least a 2nd class (Lower division) diploma in the fields of journalism, media, communication or any field, from a recognized institution.
  2. At least one principal pass and two subsidiary passes at same sitting in Uganda Advanced Certificate of Education ( UACE)
 
7 Bachelor of Project Planning and Management (BPPM) At least two principal passes at same sitting in Uganda Advanced Certificate of Education (UACE).    
8 Bachelor of Arts in Development Economics (BA DECON) At least two principal passes at same sitting in Uganda Advanced Certificate of Education (UACE).
  1. At least a 2nd class (Lower division) Diploma in Science, Business Administration, IT, Statistics, public administration, law, finance, Economics or any other related field.
  2. At least one principal pass and two subsidiary passes at same sitting in Uganda Advanced Certificate of Education ( UACE)
 
9 Bachelor of Arts in Economics (BA ECON) At least two principal passes at same sitting in Uganda Advanced Certificate of Education (UACE) of which one MUST be in Economics
  1. At least 2nd Class (Lower division) Diploma in Science, Business Administration, IT, Statistics, Economics, Library Studies, or related field from any recognized Institution.
  2. At least a principal pass in Economics and two subsidiary passes at the same sitting in UACE
  1. CCNA Certificate from a recognized institution.
  2. At least one principal pass in Economics and two subsidiary passes at same sitting in UACE.
10 Bachelor of Science in Economics (BSc. ECON)
  1. At least two principal passes at the same sitting in Uganda Advanced Certificate of Education (UACE) of which one of them MUST be in Economics.
  2. At least one subsidiary pass in Mathematics in UACE.
  1. At least 2nd Class (Lower division) diploma in Science, Business Administration, IT, engineering, Statistics or related field from any recognized Institution.
  2. At least a principal pass in Economics and two subsidiary passes at the same sitting in UACE.
  3. At least a subsidiary pass in Mathematics in UACE

11 Bachelor of Science in Quantitative Economics (BSc. QE)
  1. At least two principal passes at the same sitting in Uganda Advanced Certificate of Education (UACE) of which one MUST be in Economics.
  2. At least one subsidiary pass Mathematics in UACE
  1. At least a second class (lower division) Diploma in Science, Business Administration, Information Technology, Engineering, Statistics or related field from a recognized institution.
  2. At least a principal pass in Economics and two subsidiary passes in UACE at the same sitting.
  3. At least a subsidiary pass in Mathematics in UACE
 
12 Bachelor of Science in Accounting and Finance (BSc. AF) At least two (2) principal passes at the same sitting in Uganda Advanced Certificate of Education (UACE) or its equivalent of which one MUST be in Economics
  1. At least a Second Class Lower Division Diploma in Science, Business, Computer Science, Information Technology, Accounting, Finance, Statistics, Economics or related field from a recognized institution
  2. At least a principal pass and two subsidiary passes in Uganda Advanced Certificate of Education (UACE) or its equivalent at the same sitting.
 
13 Bachelor of Science in Statistics (BSc. STAT) At least two principal passes at the same sitting in Uganda Advanced Certificate of Education (UACE) one of which MUST be in Mathematics
  1. At least a second class (Lower division) Diploma in Statistics or any other related program (with statistics and Mathematics) from any recognized Institution.
  2. At least one principal and two subsidiary passes at the same sitting in UACE
  3. For CCNA holders - Atleast a principal pass in Mathematics
 

Postgraduate Degree Programmes

The minimum entry requirements for admission to a Postgraduate degree programme are:

  • The postgraduate diploma includes classroom/online based teaching and a research project.
  • For a candidate to be admitted into any postgraduate diploma programme, the candidate must have a degree from UTAMU or any other recognized University with a minimum of pass class degree in a relevant field, or Cumulative Grade Point Average (CGPA) of 1.5 on 5 points grading system, or
  • Higher National Diploma (HND) at credit level in related field of study from a recognized University or any other institution considered as equivalent.

Master's Programme

The Master’s degree programme consist of coursework and research leading to the submission of a thesis. To be admitted into the any of our Masters programmes the applicant;

The minimum entry requirements for admission to a Master's degree programme are:

  • A student must possess a Bachelor degree of UTAMU or of any recognized University by UTAMU Senate in the relevant field. A professional qualification from a recognized institution may be considered for admission to a professional Master’s degree.
  • Should possess a Postgraduate Diploma in the respective areas of specialisation. Such an applicant will be admitted to 2nd year of the corresponding master's programme subject to the Postgraduate Diploma having been obtained from a recognised institution and assessment of the courses done. After the assessment, some holders of the Post graduate Diplomas shall be required to do additional courses first before proceeding to the 2nd year of the master's programmes which includes a research dissertation.

The UTAMU Credit Transfer policy will apply for all master's students on related programmes at recognised institutions wishing to transfer to UTAMU

Doctor of Philosophy (PhD)

In response to the need for more PhD holders within and outside Uganda, Mbarara University of Science and Technology (MUST) and Uganda Technology and Management University (UTAMU) developed a joint institutional capacity building programme initially focusing on PhD training by research.

The normal minimum entrance qualification for registration for the joint PhD programme include:

  • A Master's degree from a recognized university in a subject appropriate to the programme to be studied; or
  • A professional or other qualification obtained by written examinations and approved by UTAMU or MUST as an appropriate entrance qualification for the PhD degree in question.
  • An applicant is considered for provisional admission into the PhD programme upon submission of the following to the UTAMU or MUST Graduate School:
  • A completed Application form should be submitted to MUST or UTAMU with the following documents:
    • Two passport size photographs;
    • Clear copy of passport and or any other valid identification;
    • English language skill certificates or demonstration that one has had all prior education in English;
    • Officially certified copies of all academic transcripts or certificates;
    • An up-to-date curriculum vitae;
    • A concept paper about the proposed PhD research can be downloaded  HERE
    • Two letters from referees; and
    • Proof of payment of application fees.

Transfer Applicants

Any Transfer student who meets minimum admission requirements is encouraged to submit an application. Students should apply online and arrange to have official transcripts sent to the Academic Registrar. Meeting these minimum requirements does not guarantee admission.

Transfer students are required to complete at least 60% of the required duration of the academic programme in residence at UTAMU to earn degree. 

International Applicants

International applicants to any of our programmes must have a qualification that is recognized for University entry in his/her home country or country where he/she has studied. The applicant will be offered a provisional admission for one semester pending equating of his/her qualification by the Uganda National Examinations Board (UNEB).

Within the framework of the general direct entry requirements, there may be Special Faculty Requirements which a candidate must fulfill to gain admission to a programme in a specific Faculty.

Provisional Admission

  • Provisional Admission may be granted to a candidate who at the time of admission does not have original copies of required documents.
  • Provisional admission of any applicant shall be cancelled if he or she fails to submit the original documents within the stipulated time.
  • There may be additional requirements for specific academic programmes, based on the professional demands.
