School of Professional & Vocational Education

The School of Professional and Vocational Education main mandate is to coordinate and manage vocational training in institutions that are partnering with Uganda Technology and Management University in the implementation of professional and vocational education in Uganda.

This school was created to address the lack of qualified personnel in professional and vocational disciplines that are much needed by Uganda's growing economic sector.

The School has recruited staff with a minimum of a master's degree who are qualified in professional and vocational education that can form part of the capacity building programme aimed at have skilled trainers of trainers within the country in both professional and vocational education. Once qualified as trainers of trainers, they shall be responsible for continuous re-skilling of trainers involved in professional and vocational education.

UTAMU Scholarship Award

UTAMU to Award Five Scholarships to Five (5) Pioneer Students Worth UGX 150 Million Uganda Technology and Management University (UTAMU) is a premier University of Technology and Management in the region recognized by the National Council for Higher Education (NCHE), a body that oversees and regulates higher education in Uganda. The National Council for Higher Education in accordance with Section 119A of the Universities and other Tertiary Institutions Act 2001 as amended has accredited the following undergraduate degree programmes for the award of Uganda Technology and Management University (UTAMU):
  • Bachelor of Science in Computer Science (B.Sc. CS);
  • Bachelor of Information Systems and Technology (BIST);
  • Bachelor of Business Administration (BBA);
  • Bachelor of Arts in Economics (BA Econ); and
  • Bachelor of Science in Economics (B.Sc. Econ).
The pioneer students on these programmes will begin studies on 10th May 2013. UTAMU would like to give back to five (5) of the pioneer students (one from each programme) a prestigious three-year student scholarship.

What does the student scholarship comprise of?

The student scholarship will cover:
  • Tuition and functional fees for three years - 10 Million;
  • Work experience for three years, where the beneficiary will work for 16 hours a week at Uganda Technology and Management University;
  • Mentorship by senior staff and partners from the private and public sectors for three years -20 Million;
  • At the end of the 3rd year those who will obtain at least a second upper class degree shall be assured of employment at UTAMU.

Who qualifies?

To qualify you must have successfully applied and been admitted to any of the above programmes. The deadline for application is 30th April 2013.

How will the winners be selected?

The students admitted on each programme will compete separately. All students admitted on a given programme have equal chances of winning. Each student will be given a ticket which he/ she will write on his/ her name and place it in a box. Students in each programme will then choose one UTAMU member of staff to randomly pick the winning ticket from the box.

Wireless Networking Workshop

Target Audience
This workshop is suitable for stakeholders with technical background and job responsibilities – Chief Technology Officer (CTO), Information Security Auditors, Network Planners,  Access network engineers and IT Operations (such as systems,  web server, and  network  administrators). Also the workshop is ideal for people who are at the beginning of their career in data communication and researchers in the field of wireless communication technologies.  However, students who good background in networking, and remote access tools can also attend.

General objective of the training
Aims to provide an in-depth technical foundation to the design and implementation wireless networking technologies in an organization. In particular, the workshop will provide participants with the knowledge and resources required to analyze, plan, design, implement and evaluate deployments of wireless technologies in organization communication infrastructure strategy).

Specific Objectives of the formation
The specific objectives include;

  1. Introduce participants to fundamental of radio communication and signinal processing
  2. Introduce participants to standards, best practices and technologies of building secure  wireless networks
  3. Introduce participants to best practices of wireless network design particularly the implementation of long distance Wi-Fi
  4. To introduce participants in the anals of wireless security audits and IT security formulations
  5. To provide insights to participants on the emerging threats in wireless environments

  3. Transmission Lines and Antennas Measurements
  4. Spectrum analysis
  5. Introduction to Wi-Fi

  7. Wireless security threats, planning and defense measurements

  9. IPV4 and IPV6 in wireless environments
  10. Access point configurations and service provisioning
  11. Outdoor installation standards and best practices

Background

Participant must have a good foundation in basic computer systems administration and networking

Cost  per participant
$350 per participant. Students with valid identification will pay only 200$

G. Visa Formalities
To enter in Uganda one requires a valid passport, an invitation letter from the hosts (where entry visa is required) and an international certificate of vaccination. Delegates are advised to check at the Uganda Embassy in their respective countries to establish whether they require visas to enter Uganda.
Participates are advised to contact their travel agencies to advise in cases where there is no Embassy or Consulate of Uganda in their country.

Currency
Uganda unit of currency is shillings; 1USD is equivalent to 2,670 Shillings. This rate should be considered an estimate. Banks are generally open from 0900hrs to 1600hrs on weekdays and on Saturdays 0900 -1200hrs. Exchange Bureaus are generally open from 0930 hrs -1730hrs on weekdays. All major credit cards are widely accepted
Electrical appliances
The voltage in UGANDA is 240 volts. Hotels may have a 110 -120 volt outlet for shavers.

It is safe to drink bottled water in KAMPALA .
