UTAMU Working with UNESCO to Promote Digital Literacy in Refugee Areas

Uganda Technology and Management University (UTAMU) is spearheading a UNESCO Programme intended to promote digital literacy and capacity development in the refugee area in Yumbe district. The UNITWIN/UNESCO Cooperation programme on literacies, green skilling and capacity development for sustainable communities will involve 10 Government agencies and 15 universities as they work together to provide the disadvantaged people an opportunity to learn, articulate issues affecting them, interact and engage with academicians and intellectuals.

The UNITWIN/UNESCO Cooperation programme representatives following a meeting at UTAMU in Bugolobi. 

Dr. Willy Ngaka, the Dean Graduate School at UTAMU, who is also the coordinator of programme says a research has been conducted on the dynamics of hosting refugees in Yumbe district and discovered a number of issues such low education and literacy levels, poverty, ethnic conflicts, high population among others. “This platform will engage in research, innovation and capacity development through multi approaches and strategies complement efforts with UNESCO to ensure a free, just, harmonious and sustainable refugee communities”.

A good university must stand on seven pillars among which is; research, innovation, community engagement and knowledge to transform communities, which is why UTAMU is very interested and committed to this cause to provide education and ICT skills to the refugees, says to Prof. Jude Lubega, the Deputy Vice Chancellor of UTAMU. The post-proposal consultative meeting of the Cooperation programme was held last on March 26 in Bugolobi Kampala.
