Universal Technology and Management University (UTAMU) has reaffirmed its commitment to community engagement, education, skills development and social transformation through its participation in celebrations held in Kibungo Cell to welcome the newly elected LC1 Chairperson.
As part of its commitment to working with communities surrounding the University, UTAMU contributed UGX 200,000 towards community development initiatives in Kibungo Cell. The engagement provided an important platform for the University to interact with local leaders, residents, young people and other stakeholders while highlighting the role of higher education in community development.
The gathering attracted several leaders and community stakeholders, including the Member of Parliament for Nansana Municipality, Hon. Zambali Bulasio Mukasa; the DPC Matugga, who represented the Guest of Honour, the Commissioner of Police for Community Affairs; the Mayor of Gombe Division; councillors; PDM chairpersons; village chairpersons; and members of the surrounding community.
Education, Skills and Technology as Drivers of Development
UTAMU Management was represented by Mr. Mwesigwa Allan, Director of Students Affairs, accompanied by Mr. Moses Atusasiire, Marketing Officer.
Addressing the gathering, Mr. Mwesigwa emphasised the importance of education in improving livelihoods and creating sustainable opportunities for individuals, families and communities. He encouraged young people and other community members to embrace education and continuous skills development as tools for responding to the changing demands of the labour market.
He particularly highlighted the growing importance of Artificial Intelligence (AI), digital skills, entrepreneurship and practical professional skills. He noted that higher education should go beyond academic qualifications by preparing learners to solve problems, create employment opportunities and contribute meaningfully to the development of their communities.
Mr. Mwesigwa also introduced community members to the various study opportunities available at UTAMU, encouraging prospective students to explore programmes that can equip them with relevant knowledge and practical competencies.
In a move aimed at expanding access to higher education, he announced half bursary opportunities for eligible students from the community who wish to join UTAMU for different academic programmes, providing an opportunity for more learners to pursue university education at a reduced tuition cost.
UTAMU and Community Development
UTAMU recognises that a university has an important role beyond teaching within the classroom. Universities can contribute to community transformation by sharing knowledge, developing skills, promoting innovation and entrepreneurship, conducting research, and creating partnerships that respond to local challenges.
Through stronger collaboration with communities such as Kibungo Cell, UTAMU can support development through education and career guidance, digital and AI literacy, entrepreneurship training, professional skills development, research and innovation, community sensitisation, youth empowerment and access to higher education opportunities.
Such partnerships can also create avenues through which community challenges are connected to academic expertise, innovation and practical solutions. At the same time, members of the community can benefit from information about university programmes, bursaries, professional training and emerging opportunities in the digital economy.
Building Stronger University – Community Partnerships
UTAMU’s participation in the Kibungo Cell celebrations strengthened the University’s visibility and relationship with the surrounding community. It also demonstrated the importance of universities working closely with local leadership and residents in promoting inclusive and sustainable development.
The University looks forward to strengthening partnerships with Kibungo Cell and other communities through education, technology, skills development, entrepreneurship and initiatives that create opportunities for young people and the wider community.
