Bachelor of Science with Education – Mathematics and Computer Science / ICT

The Bachelor of Science with Education (BSc. Ed.) complements the existing accredited programme that UTAMU runs in this area: the Bachelor of Education (Secondary). The BSc. Ed. will give students both subject area and professional expertise to enable them to become successful practitioners. The Bachelor of Science (BSc.) has a focus on the subjects of Chemistry, Biology, Physics, Geography, Economics, Computer Science and Mathematics. The BSc. will share the Professional units which are described in the Bachelor of Arts with Education under; Foundations, Psychology and Curriculum. These courses have been chosen because they are important both as foundation subjects for students in the modern world, of continuing importance for the national development of Uganda and subjects in which UTAMU can claim subject area expertise.

Career Prospects

The BSc. Ed. programme aims at producing professional teachers who are specialized and competent instructors rich in content and professional knowledge, consistent with recent global developments that heavily demand teachers armed with quality and specialised qualifications.

The BSc. Ed. programme focuses on the training of effective Science Teachers equipped with subject content and professional competencies that link schooling and the communities, as well as positively inducing national development through secondary Education.

Programme Objectives

The overall aim of the BSc. Ed. programme is to equip graduates with adequate knowledge, professional skills and attitudes in the specified Science subjects to enable them to successfully work as Teachers, Teacher educators, Curriculum Developers, Administrators and Community developers at various levels.

The following are the specific objectives of the programme:

  • To produce highly-motivated, conscientious and effective graduates who are knowledgeable both in the developmental needs of the individual students and also of the wider community;
  • To enable the acquisition of the intellectual and professional skills necessary to become successful secondary school teachers with a focus on the science subjects described in this document;
  • To cultivate a sense of national consciousness, patriotism and allegiance to the professional code of conduct as educators;
  • To prepare teachers for co-curricular activities as well as for guidance and counselling as part of their responsibilities;
  • To produce graduates adequately prepared for efficiency in educational administration, management, evaluation and measurement, and;
  • To produce self- reliant job creators rather than job seekers; and
  • To graduate teachers that have relevant conceptual understanding and it’s practical implications in their classroom engagement with learners.
Learning Outcomes

These Learning Outcomes are guided by Benjamin Bloom’s multi-tiered taxonomy of Educational Objectives covering knowledge, the cognitive (knowledge-based), psychomotor (skills-based) and affective domains, as well as Gardner’s multiple intelligences. Importantly, the Learning Outcomes mainly focus on the cognitive domain; that is, knowledge, comprehension, application, analysis, synthesis and evaluation. Therefore, at the end of the programme, successful students will have the knowledge and skills and attitudes to competently work as educators, curriculum developers, researchers, administrators, business managers and community developers. Outcomes are also guided by Garner’s multiple intelligences. Specifically, the BSc. Ed. graduates will:

  • Have a broad knowledge of the diverse learning needs of students at secondary level education;
  • Exhibit a depth of knowledge in the nature and development of Science appropriate to the requirements of the secondary curriculum;
  • Understand and be able to apply appropriate teaching methods meeting the diverse needs of students, including inquiry-based and problem-based teaching and learning, varied assessment techniques, and integrating technology where possible;
  • Demonstrate understanding of, and the required skills in, the broad range of communication modes necessary for effective teaching and learning and classroom management, to be sensitive and effective with diverse communities, and to communicate with allied professionals;
  • Demonstrate the ability to plan and implement effective teaching and learning activities that use the best practices that provide appropriate and relevant intellectual challenges for diverse students in a safe and supportive environment;
  • Demonstrate the necessary responsibility and accountability for their learning which will enable them to embrace and transmit to the students a commitment to learning as a life-long process, and;
  • Demonstrate an ability to collaborate effectively with others including fellow-professionals and the wider community to improve the relevance, design and delivery of science education.
Admission Requirements

Admission to the Bachelor of Science with Education requires a prospective candidate to meet all the standards set by the UTAMU Senate, operating within NCHE guidelines. Generally, a candidate must have attained one of the following qualifications:

  1. Degree Direct Entry
    To be eligible for admission to the Bachelor of Arts with Education under the Direct Entry scheme, an applicant must have:
    • At least two (2) principal passes at the same sitting in Uganda Advanced Certificate of Education (UACE) or its equivalent.
    • At least 5 passes in Uganda Certificate of Education or its equivalent.
    • The applicant must have passed the teaching subjects at Uganda Advanced Certificate of Education or its equivalent.
  2. Diploma Entry
    The minimum requirement for entry through the diploma scheme are as follows:
    • At least a Second Class Lower Division Diploma in a related field from a recognized institution.
    • At least a principal pass and two subsidiary passes in Uganda Advanced Certificate of Education (UACE) or its equivalent at the same sitting.
    • At least 5 passes in Uganda Certificate of Education (UCE) or its equivalent.
  3. Mature Entry
    Mature age certificate from a recognized institution.
  4. Credit Accumulation and Transfer and Exemptions
    A student may be permitted to change from one programme to another at UTAMU on condition that:
    • He/ she satisfies admission requirements for the programme applied for;
    • The student has formally applied to the Academic Registrar’s officer for the change within the first two weeks of the beginning of the semester;
    • A student permitted to change his/her programme may be allowed to transfer the credits from the previous programme to the new programme provided that the credits being transferred are relevant to the new academic programme;
    • The student may begin studies after the transfer has been approved by the University Senate;
    • A student from another institution may be allowed to transfer his/her credit units and continues studies at UTAMU provided that he/she has minimum entry requirements for the programme and the programme content is comparable to that of UTAMU. The programme and the institution must be accredited by National Council for Higher Education or any other mandated body in the jurisdiction of the Institution. Transferring students shall be required to earn at least 60% of the maximum credit unit at UTAMU in order to qualify for the award of UTAMU;
    • Students with prior qualifications such diplomas, advanced diplomas may be exempted from some courses if there is evidence that such courses were competently covered in prior qualifications. Exemptions shall not exceed 40% of the entire programme.  Exempted course shall not contribute towards a final cumulative grade point average;
    • An equivalent qualification from other institutions outside Uganda as may be determined by the Uganda National Council of Higher Education from time to time, and;
    • Exemptions: Direct entry to years other than the first year of the program requires a special resolution of the school of Faculty Board and permission of the University Senate, provided candidates have one of the following: a recognized Advanced Diploma Qualification and/or an equivalent qualification acceptable to the UTAMU. An applicant, who has undertaken and completed an Education degree in any institution in or outside Uganda, shall not be admitted to pursue a degree in Education at UTAMU Except in special circumstances as the UTAMU Senate may permit.
Program Duration
  1. The Programme shall be composed of 6 semesters, equivalent to 3 years;
  2. In line with NCHE guidelines, the length of a semester is 17 weeks, with 15 teaching weeks and 2 weeks for exams;
  3. Again, following the established guidelines, one contact hour will be equivalent to one hour of lecture or two hours of tutorial practical or 3 hours of research/field work, and;
  4. Most course are equivalent to 45 hours. 1 credit unit is defined as 15 contact hours, and therefore most courses have a value of 3 credit units.
