Boda boda riders provide an essential transport service to communities across Uganda. Their work requires much more than the ability to operate a motorcycle: riders interact continuously with passengers, handle money, respond to unexpected incidents, use mobile phones for communication and business, and depend heavily on personal reputation and customer trust.
Riders have very different educational backgrounds. Some have completed secondary or post-secondary education, while others have had little or no formal schooling. A conventional academic short course could therefore exclude the very people the programme is intended to serve. This programme is deliberately competency-based, practical, visual, oral and inclusive. It focuses on what a participant can understand and apply in daily motorcycle transport work rather than on prior academic qualifications or lengthy written examinations.
The proposed two-week programme can serve as a UTAMU flagship community outreach initiative by taking practical university knowledge to a large informal-sector workforce and strengthening professionalism, customer care, emergency awareness, financial discipline, personal branding and productive use of smartphones.
Career Prospects
The programme shall be guided by the principle: Learn it today; use it on the road today. Training will use demonstrations, pictures, short videos, storytelling, role-play, guided practice and simple oral or practical checks. Literacy should not be a barrier to participation.
Target Participants
- Practicing boda boda riders, whether independent, stage-based, association/SACCO members or platform-linked.
- New and aspiring motorcycle transport operators.
- Motorcycle delivery riders where the learning is relevant.
- Stage leaders and rider association representatives who can champion professional service standards.
Programme Objectives
The aim is to equip motorcycle transport operators with practical service, emergency-response, business and digital skills that strengthen professionalism, customer trust, personal responsibility and livelihood management.
- Develop professional customer-care attitudes and behaviours.
- Build basic first-aid and emergency-response awareness appropriate to a rider's role.
- Help riders create a trustworthy and recognisable personal service brand.
- Strengthen everyday financial discipline, record keeping and saving habits.
- Enable riders to use smartphones more effectively for communication, navigation, record keeping, customer service and business growth.
- Promote dignity, professionalism and continuous self-improvement in motorcycle transport services.
Learning Outcomes
By the end of the programme, a successful participant should be able to:
- Demonstrate respectful customer reception, communication and passenger care.
- Respond calmly to common incidents and demonstrate basic first-aid and emergency-response steps taught in the course, while recognising when professional emergency assistance is required.
- Present themselves and their motorcycle service professionally and explain what makes their personal service different.
- Separate business money from personal money and use a simple daily income-and-expense record.
- Set a basic savings or financial goal linked to their motorcycle transport work.
- Use key smartphone functions for calls/messages, maps/navigation, mobile money awareness, simple business records and customer follow-up.
- Develop a simple personal commitment plan for professional motorcycle transport service.
Admission Requirements
There shall be no minimum academic qualification. A participant should be a practising or aspiring motorcycle transport/delivery operator, or another approved community participant. Ability to read and write shall not be a condition for participation. Facilitators shall accommodate participants who require oral, visual or assisted learning.

The proposed duration is three (3) weeks, comprising six practical learning modules. Delivery may be organised in short sessions that fit around riders' working schedules.
