Higher Education Certificate (HEC)

Career Prospects

Students who will successfully complete this Higher Education Certificate shall be enrolled on different programmes in Business, IT and social sciences. They will be able to choose from a variety of careers including IT Technicians, Accounting, Project Planning and Management, Business Administration among others.

Programme Objectives

Graduates of this programme shall qualify to earn an equivalent of A’ Level according to the Uganda Education System. They shall therefore qualify to be admitted to pursue further studies for programs at the level of:

  • Undergraduate Diploma
  • Undergraduate Degree
Learning Outcomes

The Higher Education Certificate is at level four of the Uganda Higher Education Qualifications Framework.  The individuals who obtain this award are required to:

  1. Demonstrate basic knowledge of the underlying concepts and principles associated with their area(s) of study and an ability to evaluate and interpret these within the context of that area of study.
  2. Demonstrate an ability to present, evaluate and interpret qualitative and quantitative data, in order to develop lines of arguments and make sound judgments in accordance with basic theories and concepts of their area of study.
  3. Evaluate the appropriateness of different approaches to solving problems related to their area of study and/or work.
  4. Communicate the results of their study/work accurately and reliably, and with structured and coherent arguments.
  5. Apply their subject-related transferable skills in contexts where individuals may have some limited personal responsibility, but the criteria for decisions and the scope of the task are well defined.
  6. Undertake further training and develop new skills within a structured and managed environment.
  7. Work with others to achieve defined objectives. In addition, they should be able to take up leadership roles in-group work.
Admission Requirements
  1. Uganda Certificate of Education or its equivalent and Uganda Advanced Certificate of Education with at least two subsidiary passes obtained in principal subjects or its equivalent. For avoidance of doubt, a holder of UACE with only one principal pass shall be deemed to meet the admission requirements.
  2. Vocational Qualifications at level 2 or level 3 of the Uganda Vocational Qualifications Framework.
  3. Qualifications equivalent to Uganda Advanced Certificate of Education (UACE) as shall be determined by the National Council in consultation with the Uganda National Examinations Board.
  4. An ordinary certificate from an institution recognized by NCHE.
  5. Students whose foreign secondary school qualifications are not considered equivalent to UACE but permit admission into Higher Education in the foreign country. Such students shall have passed at least five subjects with at least a credit in each of the five subjects. In addition, foreign students whose studies were not conducted in English shall show proof of proficiency in the English Language. The English proficiency centers shall be accredited by NCHE.
Program Duration

The program will extend over a period of one academic year. An academic year shall consist of two semesters. A semester shall consist of 15 weeks of lectures.
